Bringing fun and energy to every stage.
Bringing fun and energy to every stage.
Hello, my name is Natalie Ross and I am a professional vocal coach with nearly 20 years of experience. I specialise in vocal and performance training in contemporary and popular music. I am based in Cranleigh in the Surrey Hills. I bring a fresh and fun approach to my lessons, using years of knowledge and expertise and I’m always focused on making a secure and comfortable environment for my students to thrive in. It is of great importance to me to provide each and every student with a tailor-made breathing and vocal warm up routine. This is something I focus on from the very first lesson. ‘Knowing how to practice at home’ makes all the difference to your progress and improvement. Once this is set up, you will start to put into practice techniques that will build up your confidence, these techniques set the ground work for all your singing goals, which make the whole process much more enjoyable.
During a lesson we will cover:
The diaphragm technique - Breathing techniques for improved breath control
Vocal warm-up exercises to build muscle memory, enhance vocal performance and access your vocal range
Vocal techniques to reduce strain and improve vocal health
Connecting emotionally to the lyrics of the song, using the voice to convey the message and using dynamics
Choosing songs that suit your voice and working on new styles to experiment with your sound
Harmony, ear training and pitching
Develop your unique sound and style with Improvisation
Audition techniques to help you stand out
Confidence – overcoming hurdles, mindset and practice techniques
I have played guitar since I was ten years old and have acquired a vast experience as a rhythm guitarist, playing in both bands and as a soloist. I have always accompanied my students on acoustic guitar during lessons and in concerts. Singing along to a live instrument as well as another voice enhances your ear training significantly; for example, it improves your capacity to pitch notes and your overall rhythm skills. Once you have chosen a song to work on, I will transpose the song into the right key to suit your voice, bringing out the best in your vocal range, boosting your unique sound and helping you to feel more comfortable and confident to sing it.

VOCAL WARM UPS AND EXERCISES
Work through your vocal range with scales and ascending/descending melodies to connect your listening skills, breathing control and your voice. Ear training, smoothing out vocal range issues or strengthening areas where there may be weaknesses or no experience.
'Call and response', improvisation and harmony exercises which build up muscle strength/release tension.
WORK ON A SONG
I help you achieve your goals by looking at vocal techniques, exploring your vocal textures, the 'chest voice' to 'head voice' and where those changes may occur within the melody, and guide you through more challenging sections. Performance techniques like connecting to the emotion and the lyrics, rhythm, timing, and dynamics. Finding the appropriate key to suit your voice and noting down and practicing where to breathe.
HOMEWORK
I provide bespoke recordings for you to use to practice at home, consisting of warm ups and backing tracks specifically chosen to reach your goals. If you are working on a song then I provide a list of instructions to work through in your own time.
I started playing guitar and singing at a young age and became obsessed. By age fifteen, I was performing weekly at open-mic nights as well as at local competitions and events, before joining my first band when I was sixteen. I studied a degree at The Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford from 2002 to 2004, during which time I was mentored by a producer from BMG who helped me hone my songwriting skills and learn about recording. I then went on to work with several managers, including Andy Ross (Food Records, discovered Blur), and was mentored by Tom Robinson during his BBC6 Introducing years. After several bands and projects, I released my own album produced by Stuart Churchill called Trains Go Cha Cha, and toured throughout the UK and Europe. I worked with producer Dean Barratt on my next EP called You've Got That Feeling and then went on to work with Charlie Andrew (Brit Award winner 'British Producer of the Year') on my next EP titled The Thrill Of It All. I have supported Ed Sheeran, Scott Matthews, Madness, Imelda May, Newton Faulkner, and many others in some of the UK's most iconic venues, from Ronnie Scott's to Glastonbury Festival.
Before moving to Barcelona and setting up my singing academy in the Gràcia neighbourhood, I spent ten years as a private vocal coach in Guildford, teaching one-to- one, group lessons and online. I helped develop up-and-coming talent, young singer-songwriters and enthusiastic beginners. I worked with individuals who were on a journey of self-discovery, who wanted to realise their full vocal potential and learn about themselves. During that time, I was appointed singing teacher for two secondary schools in Hampshire, as well as being musical director for various performing arts clubs. I also wrote and taught my own song writing workshops and ran a school choir.
In 2015 I started My Singing Group, a community choir in Barcelona and went on to run two groups for six years. Members came from all four corners of the globe. The groups performed at different events around the city, and three times a year, I organised Student Showcases in the heart of the famous Gótico neighbourhood. These shows were intimate and nurturing, a place where all my students could perform and thrive. During my time in Barcelona, I was appointed head of music of the prestigious secondary school Aula. I learnt so much living abroad about different cultures and ways of life, and I learnt to speak Spanish.
